Description
Tender dumplings in a rich, savory broth with juicy shredded chicken – this Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings Recipe brings cozy Southern comfort to your own kitchen.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 7 cups chicken stock or broth
- 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- If chicken is not cooked, roast, poach, or bake until done. Shred into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk until dough forms.
- Lightly flour a work surface, roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness, and cut into strips about 1 inch wide by 3 inches long.
- Bring chicken stock to a boil in a large pot, then reduce to a gentle simmer.
- Drop dough strips into simmering broth one at a time, stirring gently to prevent sticking. Simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add shredded chicken, season with salt and pepper, and heat through before serving.
Notes
For creamier broth, stir in 1/2 cup heavy cream before serving. Add carrots, celery, and onion for extra flavor. Simmer gently to prevent dumplings from breaking apart.
